Live fully and have no regrets.
You need to be strong and true to yourself.
That is more important than any technique.
That is the struggle of every artist. A photographer on photography and life.
i think it's good to conceptualise photography as more of a means to something else (although one could choose much worse alternative means for sure), i find that even as a hobby it already can become surprisingly consuming in both time and energy.
and as beautiful as pictures are, they are mainly just triggers and catalysts that set off our own inner thoughts and preconceptions in our hearts and minds...
That is why photography is such a useful tool for growth. You can express inner thoughts and you can read your own state in the images you create. It is not the most obvious tool compared to psychoanalysis or meditation, but it is good for me.
I am a portrait photographer. I am inspired by photographs that go beyond the literal documentation of what a person looks like. I want to show something about the condition of a person or what is inside the person. That is my daily challenge.
